This broad theme gives the artists a possibility of different interpretations. We have pieces showing the live of the individual in today’s world marked by the circumstances of today’s society and environment. Other works are reflecting the leaders who in a daily struggle work against the given environment and try to reach the little better for the well being of their dear ones, their society. Free Nation is an artistic inside somewhere trapped between finding your individual soul, getting integrated in the bigger picture and to keep your sovereignty against forces which seem to overpower you.
Enjoy the works presented at this exhibition. The launch of the Gallery's second group exhibition "Reaching New Horizons" on 28th February was a great success. It was attended by about a hundred people, comprising government officials, business managers, tour operators, educators, artists and art lovers, most of whom lingered for some hours over their glass of wine, enjoying the artistic ambience.
Organised by the Visual Arts Council the exhibition features works from over 30 artists from around Zambia, including those of senior Zambian artists Vincent Maonde, Lawrence Yombwe, Poto Kabwe, Eva Middleton, Kalumbwa Chungu, Benjamin Mibenge, Patrick Mweemba, Agness Buya Yombwe, Danny Chiyesu, Matthew Mudenda and Chansa Chishimba. Numerous promising young and upcoming artists are also represented. A variety of media and techniques are presented, including acrylic, oil and water colour painting, photography, graphite drawing, stone and wood sculpture, bead work, cross-stitch and textile collage. The exhibition will run through May 2015 and the gallery hopes for an even better response to this exhibition than it received for the first one, which marked the opening of the gallery in October 2014. The Livingstone Art Gallery is pleased to present its second group exhibition of new works featuring artists from around Zambia. “Reaching New Horizons” will run from 28th February 2015 – 31st May 2015, with an opening reception on Saturday, 28th February.
Over 30 artists countrywide will be featured in the show, including senior Zambian artists: Vincent Maonde, Lawrence Yombwe, Agnes Buya Yombwe, Eva Middleton, Chungu Kalumbwa, Patrick Mwemba, Benjamin Mibenge and Chansa Chishimba, to name but a few,. Many of the works are inspired by Zambia’s rich culture and beautiful natural environment and explore different techniques such as painting, prints, sculpture, collage, graphite drawing and watercolor. “Reaching New Horizons” is the second exhibition hosted at Livingstone Art Gallery. The Gallery was overwhelmed by the positive response received from its first exhibition, launched in honor of the country’s independence Golden Jubilee. Livingstone Art Gallery looks forward to its new exhibition as it continues to build its capacity as a national arts institution and strives to reach new horizons in Zambian art. The commissioning of the Livingstone Art Gallery on 16th October 2014 also encompassed the launch of a national exhibition to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Zambia's Independence, under the theme, "Fifty Years of Visual Expression”. The theme was deliberately crafted to reflect the development and emergence of new art forms, media and vibrant daring artists side by side with the unique, almost forgotten but yet alive creative expressions by the great icons of art in Zambia such as Henry Tayali, Martin Phiri, Cynthia Zukas and Gabriel Ellison, to mention but a few.
The exhibition, which was curated by artist and gallery owner, Lawrence Yombwe, ends on 27th January, 2015. It showcases artwork created by Zambian artists and artists living in Zambia from 1964 to date and is also a reflection of Zambia`s creative and dynamic art scene, which can be a force to reckon with in wealth and result in job creation if properly nurtured and supported. The National Arts Council acknowledges the contribution from institutions such as the Lusaka National Museum, Livingstone Museum and many individuals who released their prized artworks in their collection to be part of this memorable occasion. The concept of having a purpose-built art gallery in Livingstone was conceived by the Zambia National Visual Arts Council in 1992. Between 2004 and 2005, a small structure was constructed on the current premises to cater for artists in residency programmes. Part of the structure was later modified to act as exhibition space but it was not adequate to render the required artistic services.
In 2012, preparatory meetings to co-host the 20th session of UNWTO General Assembly began and it was in one of these meetings that the National Arts Council of Zambia proposed that among the structures to be constructed as a legacy for the conference should be an art gallery. Construction of this first Government built art gallery was completed and handed over to the National Arts Council of Zambia on 21st August 2014. The facility was officially commissioned by the Minister of Tourism and Arts, Honourable Jean Kapata M.P. on 16th October 2014. It was a colourful event with entertainment from the National Dance Troupe and attended by over a hundred invited guests. |
